We watch as her life begins to crack around her, but largely, that is it. It is so sparse that it makes the gorgeous 45 Years, for which she received her only Oscar nomination in 2016, look as action-packed as an Avengers movie. Her private life attracted as many headlines as her films. In the 60s she lived with her agent and partner, Bryan Southcombe, and their friend, the model Randall Laurence; there were rumours of a menage a trois, but she always denied it.
The after-party at the French macaron cafe Ladurée SoHo was low-key. Waiters circulated with sliders, plates of oversize French fries and movie tie-in cocktails by Lillet. The space was small, so it didn’t take more than a handful of people (models in cutout dresses, Ms. Young and the actors Hill Harper and Isiah Whitlock Jr.) to make it feel crowded. It is rare to find a mention of Rampling that does not refer to her credentials as a muse. She has been a muse to François Ozon, who revived her film career in the late 90s, to designer Yves St Laurent and photographers Helmut Newton and Juergen Teller (posing nude for the latter in front of the Mona Lisa), and now to Andrea Pallaoro, too.

Rampling constantly provoked both herself and her audience. Her unusual beauty, the sharp planes of her face, the long slim body, still attracted long after her Dolly Bird days. Hannah’s director, Andrea Pallaoro, had always imagined Rampling in the part, and no wonder. “I think he wanted, more than anything, a presence,” she says. “He thought I was the only actress of my generation that could really hold this character.” There is barely any dialogue, and it goes through the monotony of Hannah’s days in painstaking detail.
Rampling has made over 110 films, partnering with an impressive list of male co-stars including Sean Connery, Peter O’Toole and Paul Newman. These movies were as diverse as Cleanskin, a terrorist thriller; The Mill and The Cross, in which she plays a nun; Street Dance; and Night Train to Lisbon. The film was screened at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.
A year later she struck gold with the 60s classic Georgy Girl, an upbeat comedy with a dark underbelly in which she played posh mean-girl Meredith. I remind Rampling of the trailer, which describes her as a “sexy little dish” and “a doll never out of trouble”. Rampling starred in Claude Lelouch's 1984 film Viva la vie (Long Live Life), before going on to star in the cult-film Max, Mon Amour (1986), and appear in the thriller Angel Heart (1987). For a decade she withdrew from the public eye due to depression. In 1997, she was a jury member at the 54th Venice International Film Festival. After this, her acting career blossomed in both English and French cinema.
Given that her career has, in its own right, been extraordinary, I wonder how she feels about the idea of being a muse. “I think it’s a question of age, because when you’re much younger, you could be. Rampling has admitted that she doesn’t make films to entertain people, that she chooses roles to challenge herself, to break through her own barriers. I generally don’t make films to entertain people, I choose the parts that challenge me to break through my own barriers. A need to devour, punish, humiliate, or surrender seems to be a primal part of human nature, and it’s certainly a big part of sex.
With the sum total of what I’ve taken on board, it would be fantastic to be a young woman of 18. Maybe that extraordinary knowing-unknowing of youth, when you feel you really know things. You have the youthful power and then you have to go through life to really know.
